The Chase Care Home, Watford

About this project

2007 –¬†Shortlisted for Pinders Healthcare Design Awards

This 100 bed care home for Life Style Care is on the site of what was The Sun Print Works in Watford.

The name of the home, The Chase, is taken from the rectangular metal frame in which metal type and plates are tightly looked up for letterpress printing, so the memory of the original printing works lives on.

The site was heavily contaminated due to the printing works which had occupied the site since 1912.

Before construction work could begin a major decontamination procedure removed vast quantities of material from the site which was regularly monitored for contamination.

The accommodation includes a 10 bed YPD unit, 40 bed EMI unit and 60 frail and elderly bedrooms.

All ancillary and staff areas are at third floor and includes staff flats for seven resident employees, a regional managers office as well as training facilities.
