About this project

2012 – Winner of Pinders Healthcare Design Awards. New Build, Young Persons category

Scarbrough Court Care Home occupies a prominent position at the east of the site, adjacent to other large civic and amenity buildings. The home provides 19 nursing beds and 36 residential beds, all in spacious single rooms with en-suite showers and toilets.

Hoist tracking is provided to all nursing rooms to give residents with restricted mobility more independence.

The building was the first care home in the UK to the designed to achieve a zero carbon rating. The home is primarily heated from a ground source heat pump. The overall plan of the building has been designed as a heat trap, maximising heat gain from the afternoon sun.

Bricks and stone selected for the project have been sourced locally to minimise transport emissions of carbon dioxide, while durable timber has been chosen for external cladding and has been installed without the application of environmentally harmful chemical treatments.
