Barbican Ventures York

About this project

DWA Architects worked with Barbican Ventures Ltd. and York City Council on the redevelopment of the Barbican Centre.

This has involved the urban planning of the area to produce a scheme that is viable, respects the grade I listed city walls and adjoining residential properties and architecturally attractive.

Due to the important civic function and size of the Barbican Centre, this site, although outside of the city walls, had to be treated as a city centre site. Therefore the new buildings to be constructed on the site had to be of high architectural merit and, as well as their function, be sited to add support to the Barbican Centre to increase its status in order that it could be recognised as York’s major auditorium.

This development is certainly located in a sensitive urban environment and the approved scheme had to be innovative in order to fulfil the client’s brief.
