Britain is GREAT
DWA Architects have been actively involved in the ‘GREAT Britain Campaign’ – a government initiative which aims to showcase the very best of what Britain has to offer, and encourages countries from around the world to visit, study and do business with the UK.
As part of this scheme, DWA Architects have attended visits around the globe, building relationships with business’, helping us to export our knowledge and expertise.
For example, Anthony Lymath, International Associate at DWA Architects, joined Chancellor George Osborne on his visit to China to attend the 7th UK-China Economic and Financial Dialogue. Whilst on the trip, Anthony attended a mixture of official lunches, speeches and receptions. In between, various business opportunities were also arranged which were tailored to our expertise. Click here to find out more about this trip.
DWA Architects have also been invited to visit China again in November 2015, and exhibit at the International Healthcare Expo on the ‘Britain Is GREAT, Healthcare UK’ stand.

DWA Architects & Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada
We are currently building a working relationship with Professor Habib Chaudhary, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada.
Professor Chaudhary, a specialist in areas such as Aging and Built Environment and Design for Dementia, is collaborating in the work of DWA Architects, acting as an advisor, which will greatly benefit our clients, particularly within developing countries.
DWA Architects, Guangzhou Medical University & University of Bradford
Mel Fairbourn-Varley, Director of International Projects at DWA Architects, is helping to develop links between two Universities, Guangzhou Medical University & the University of Bradford.
This potential partnership will provide Guangzhou Medical University, Guangdong Province, China, with on-line and visiting lecturers from the University of Bradford, available to train their care staff to UK standards and thereby lift the cultural status of the profession in China.
The innovative collaboration will assist our clients, by bringing world leading Dementia carer and specialist nurse training to the region. This will specifically benefit our Chinese Elderly Care Project, which is designed to accommodate over 750 care home and 450 assisted living residents.
In addition, both Universities offer carer, specialist nursing and Dementia healthcare degrees and so by developing these links, it allows them to share their cross-cultural knowledge and nursing expertise – which will, in turn, help to impact positively on the future of healthcare architecture and environmental design.
We are able to help with such partnerships, due to our strong reputation in healthcare architecture within the UK and overseas
York and Luxor City Twinning Initiative
In an attempt to promote the City of York internationally, and as part of the practices membership of the York Export Forum, DWA Architects have been helping to develop a commercial City Twinning initiative between York, UK and Luxor, Egypt.
Mel Fairbourn-Varley, Director of International Projects at DWA Architects has already spearheaded talks with Egyptian officials and has involved Professor Joann Fletcher, an Egyptologist and honorary research fellow in the Department of Archaeology at the University of York and the presenter of the BBC’s Ancient Egypt: Life and Death in the Valley of the Kings. Professor Fletcher has been able to showcase historically how the city-twinning initiative is backed-up with almost 2,000 years of history.
Whilst currently on-hold due to the Arab Spring and the political stabilisation of Egypt, this initiative will in the near future be developed through DWA Architects on-going extensive contacts in the region and in particular across the cities of Cairo and Luxor, Egypt.
