Church Crookham’s Luxury Care Home in Final for Top Design ‘Oscar’
A state-of-the-art care home has been shortlisted for a top design award.
The Ridings, on Bourley Road, has been nominated for the prestigious Pinders Design Award 2015.
The Pinders Awards celebrate design excellence in the healthcare sector and recognise the contribution care providers, designers and architects make to the quality of life in care homes through revolutionary design.
The Ridings impressed judges, putting them in the running for the Best Care Home category.
The £7 million 60-bed home, which officially opened last June, combines boutique hotel interior design with leading-edge dementia and innovative specialist care facilities.
Gracewell Healthcare, the group behind The Ridings, followed best practice from academics at the University of Stirling, the UK leaders in dementia design research, to produce a new generation of care home.
The home has been built to assist residents living with dementia and includes specially selected art work and large memorable antiques and objects to remind people where they are in the home, daylight-style internal lighting to stop people tripping or getting disorientated and built-in memory boxes outside every bedroom where residents and their families can display cherished photographs and mementoes.
The ensuite bedrooms, which have a clear line of sight between the bed and the bathroom, crucial for those living with dementia, are also much larger than industry standard so two carers can easily move around the bed and assist a resident when required.
And to top it all off The Ridings has a beauty salon, a New York-style nail bar, a chic cafe serving gourmet food, and a computer corner with Wi-Fi access.
Home Manager Sarah-Jane Parkin said: “When people walk through the door for the first time they can’t quite believe it’s a care home.
“It’s so important that The Ridings is first and foremost a welcoming home and somewhere you would feel it a pleasure to live, so while we took the best advice from dementia experts we ensured the design wasn’t intrusive.”
The Pinders Healthcare Design Awards ceremony will be held at The Lancaster Hotel in London on 25th March 2015.
