Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM) is one of the world’s leading environmental benchmarks for ‘green’ projects. It was originally a voluntary standard for ‘environmentally aware’ developers but it has now been adopted by many planning authorities as a means of ensuring ‘sustainable development’. As a direct result, planning permissions are now issued with a condition requiring BREEAM compliance.
Chris Bracewell is the practice BREEAM assessor, licensed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE Global), and he engages with professional colleagues during the design process to ensure that the environmental impact of the design meets the BREEAM targets and certification is achieved.
A BREEAM Assessor is most effective when they can work with the designers through the design development process and advise on BREEAM targets and compliance. His appointment during the early stages of a project is recommended.
